Inspired by the true story of the World War II era . Tatsuo is the grandson of a Japanese ruling generals in Korea while June Shik was the son of the servant of the General . They both are rivals . Especially in terms of running a marathon . Since first met when the child - a child , they had a contest run . This continued until high school. But war broke out and they were forced to enlist in the army . Tatsuo became defense chief in June unit Shik and he planned a scheme but failed . June Shik and Tatsuo captured by the Soviets . They fled but was soon captured by the Germans and forced to separate . In 1944 , they met again on the Normandy coast .
